Scones and Garden

Cherry Chocolate Scones

We had some beautiful Sweet Red Cherries and thought that some chocolate chips would be wonderful together.  This recipe can be used with most any fruit or nuts.  ~Makes 8 large scones.

3 cups soft white wheat flour or 1/2 whole wheat and 1/2 white flour
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon soda
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup butter, cold and cut into small cubes
1 cup goat milk kefir, buttermilk or plain kefir
1 cup diced dried or fresh fruit, drained (I used quartered cherries)
1/2 cup chocolate chips or chopped nuts
Preheat oven to 425'.  Lightly grease cookie sheet.  Mix all dry ingredients together.  Cut in butter.  Add kefir and mix lightly.  Place on a lightly floured dinner plate and put into freezer for 5 minutes.  Press fruit and nuts into dough.  Cut into eights and shape as desired.  Place onto cookie sheet.  Bake for 20 minutes or until lightly browned.  Sift powdered sugar or a light glaze on top while still warm.  Cool for 10 to 15 minutes before serving.

Today's Garden Goodness

This is the pickings for today, along with 2 quarts of goat milk.  We have been busy picking and drying calendula, plantain, yarrow, lavender, chickweed, horehound and catnip.  We are so blessed this time of year with all of the garden's bounty.
